A questionnaire was developed in the framework of this study and validated elsewhere (De Smet et al, unpublished, 2019). The intention to improve sleep was defined as users’ intention to go to bed on time (measured in evening diaries, averaged over 14 days, and dichotomized by no intention ≤3 [completely disagree to neutral] and >3 [rather to completely agree] on a 1- to 5-point rating scale).

For background information on effectiveness calculations, we refer the readers to an earlier meta-analysis by De Smet et al [2]. The following were the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the studies: 1. Studies were included if they investigated serious digital games, defined as organized play with a set of rules by which to play and a goal, which created a challenge, provided feedback or showed outcomes, entailed interaction, and had a topic [1].
