Update: This is an archived post. The latest impact factor released in June 2019 confirms we remain a leading digital health journal, with a new impact factor of 4.301.
(27 June 2018). According to the new Journal Impact Factors in the JCR 2017 released today, the journals of JMIR Publications remain the leading digital health journals, with J Med Internet Res (JIF 4.671) ranked #1 and JMIR mhealth and uHealth (JIF 4.541) ranked #2.
JMIR Serious Games received an impressive first JIF 2.226 - it is right from the start the leading gaming journal, ahead of established titles such as the Games for Health Journal (Mary Ann Liebert), which has an impact factor of 1.876 but charges a whopping Article Processing Fee of $3200 (in comparison, JMIR Serious Games charges only $1750).
As illustrated in the table below, journals published by JMIR Publications are also the most cost-effective, taking into account impact factor ranking and costs (Article Processing Charges).
JMIR journals beat for example the impact factor of JAMIA (Impact Factor 4.3), International Journal of Medical Informatics (Impact Factor 3.0), Journal of Biomedical Informatics (Impact Factor 2.9), BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making (Impact Factor 2.1), while being substantially cheaper.
Obviously, the impact factor is not the only metric of influence and quality (and it takes many years to get an official impact factor), but it should also be stressed that JMIR journals currently awaiting an impact factor are all Pubmed-indexed and with an APF of $1500 or less substantially cheaper than new competitor journals like npj digital medicine or Internet Interventions, which are currently not PubMed indexed and charge substantially higher fees.
