It was developed using a compilation of validated questionnaires and tools (including some in Arabic), specifically the College Student Health Survey Questionnaire 2021 from Boynton Health, University of Minnesota [50,51]; the International Physical Activity Questionnaire—short form (IPAQ-SF) [52,53]; the 5-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-5) [54]; the 16-item European Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16) [55,56]; and the Youth Health Care measure—satisfaction, utilization, and needs (YHC-SUN) [57

Despite the recognition of the importance of youth-friendly health services 2 decades ago [8], progress has been slow [9,10]. Communication between young people and health care providers regarding their health needs remains minimal [11].

As a secondary exploratory aim, we will examine the extent to which our theoretically guided mechanisms of change (ie, self-efficacy, clinician-youth communication) lead to increased HIV and STI testing and prevent or reduce HIV/STI risk behaviors.
The proposed study is innovative, as it is the first to combine m Health and storytelling to facilitate clinician-youth communication, deliver prevention services, linkage to care, and treatment immediately [27,36,37].

This study consisted of 2 independent pilot studies examining the impact of access to Purrble for two subgroups of minority youth at risk of self-harm: (1) LGBTQ+ youth and (2) racial and ethnic minority groups. These pilot studies followed the same mixed methods design using daily and weekly self-report surveys, with optional follow-up interviews, as shown in Figure 1.

Engaging Youth in the Bipolar Youth Action Project: Community-Based Participatory Research
The BDSBC recruited 12 youth by advertising the project within their community network and interviewing prospective members, with the expectation that there would be some attrition over the study’s 2-year span. The recruitment process and inclusion criteria were the same as in the prefunding phase, with the addendum that members of the Youth Action Group must also be able to complete a 2.5-hour research ethics course (the Tri-Council Policy Statement Course on Research Ethics).

National epidemiologic data suggest that substance use behaviors, including alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, are widespread among the youth [11]. Substance use behaviors often parallel other risk behaviors [12] and have been linked to increased sexual risk behaviors among the youth [8,13,14]. In addition to preventing and reducing substance use and sexual risk behaviors, STI and HIV testing are key strategies to reduce the high rates of STI/HIV infection among the youth [15,16].

As part of this approach, the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) was engaged in all aspects of the study, including proposal submission, development of the interview guide, participant recruitment, identification of content for app development, and manuscript preparation.
