We suggest avenues for shaping the co-design experience as affordances to empower participation [39] reflecting on what was significant in the experience of the participants from their point of view. Affordances, described by Gibson [40], are what the environment provides to the living and, as mentioned by Dewey [14], “[a]t every moment, the living creature is exposed to dangers from its surroundings, and at every moment it must draw upon something in its surroundings to satisfy its needs.”

The perceived affordances, or perceived action possibilities (eg, learn health tips), that users sense from app features also directly impact a user’s experience and likelihood to engage with a design [22-24]. Specifically for mediated communication, including apps, design communicates what the viewer can do or gain from the use of an app, through interface symbols.

The affordances framework provides insight on how SM aligns with these unique aspects of adolescent development [13]. Affordances are key design aspects of SM platforms that underlie how users use them. For adolescents, functional, social, cognitive, emotional, and identity affordances encourage exploration, learning, and practicing of skills that are key for development.

In this study, we conceptualize social media use as a motivated behavior driven by individuals’ desire to fulfill their psychological and social needs [11] and hypothesize that differential motivations influence individuals’ choice of differential social media platforms, as they offer differential affordances. Frequency of use of differential platforms will be differentially associated with e-cigarette message exposure, which, in turn, influences attitude toward e-cigarette use.
