Factors Influencing the Acceptance and Adoption of Mobile Health Apps by Physicians During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Systematic Review

The more specific search terms used were as follows: “mobile health,” “m Health,” “m Health,” or “mobile app”; “adoption,” “acceptance,” “barrier,” or “attitude”; and “physician,” “doctor,” or “practitioner.” We used Covidence (Veritas Health Innovation, Ltd), a web-based collaboration software platform, to support the screening of the identified studies, all of which were uploaded onto the platform. A 2-step screening procedure was conducted to evaluate the relevance of the studies.

Video consultation—defined here as a synchronous communication between the general practitioner (GP) and the patient using video calling [1]—was barely in use in general practice in countries in Northern Europe before the COVID-19 pandemic (Table 1). During the COVID-19 pandemic, when video consultation was abruptly introduced in general practice, there was a strong belief that the pandemic would serve as “the window of opportunity” [2] for its widespread and long-term adoption.
