They suggested that having an additional field to securely write this information directly on the tablet would make the process more accessible. One participant explained, “We usually arrive at least half an hour earlier, so we can ask the nurses which participant corresponds to which name, and write down what they look like. We do that to find them back more easily during the observation.”

Fifteen practices were randomized into the “paper without incentive” group, 10 into the “paper with incentive” group, 7 into the “paper or web-based with tablet” group (ie, patients were given the option of using either paper or a tablet provided by the researchers), and 7 into the “paper or web-based via QR code” group (ie, patients were given the option of using either paper or a QR code if they had their smartphones with them).

Vest Aid [8] is an innovative tablet-based app for home or clinic use to objectively track exercise compliance and provide VORx1 performance feedback to both the treating physical therapist and the participant (Figure 1). Video instruction helps participants recall how to do the VORx1 exercises and a metronome guides head speed during the exercises. With the tablet camera, facial and eye recognition software is used to analyze the accuracy of head and eye movement during the exercise.

Task performance is measured by examining the position of a virtual ball on the screen of a touchscreen tablet, estimated using the inertial sensors embedded in the tablet. The test can be easily adapted to a dual task condition, for example, by asking the individual to balance the ball while simultaneously doing a different, attention demanding task. The test can be completed comfortably and safely in a sitting position.

Specifically, photographs, music, and videos can be uploaded to a secure space through the tablet or the COMPAs website, allowing families to remotely add content to enrich their loved one’s COMPAs space. Apart from the content provided by the family, the COMPAs artificial intelligence module provides access to personalized internet content related to the person’s life history (eg, places where the person lived, favorite sports, animals, and hobbies).

The first approach relies on the use of computer or tablet devices that present instructions for the task steps based on participants’ requests. Typically, participants initiate the request by performing a specific action such as touching an area of the computer or tablet screen [5,9,22-24].
