Investigating Patient Perspectives on Using eHealth Technologies for the Self-Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Mixed Methods Study

Investigating Patient Perspectives on Using eHealth Technologies for the Self-Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Mixed Methods Study

Being a chronic condition, IBD entails lifelong self-management; even in remission, IBD is known to have a severe impact on mental health, with recent evidence suggesting that approximately 30% of people with IBD report symptoms of anxiety or depression [5-7]. Self-management, including the patient’s ability to monitor their condition, is not only effective in relieving health care but is also well known to effectively maintain or even increase quality of life [4,8].

Development and Validation of a Mobile-Centered Digital Health Readiness Scale (mDiHERS): Health Literacy and Equity Scale

Development and Validation of a Mobile-Centered Digital Health Readiness Scale (mDiHERS): Health Literacy and Equity Scale

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis, is characterized by chronic digestive tract inflammation. This condition leads to a range of symptoms that significantly impact the quality of life [18]. The persistent symptoms and activity of IBD, even with the best medical or surgical interventions, highlight the critical need for ongoing surveillance and management [19].

Integrating Virtual Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Into Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care: Mixed Methods Feasibility Trial

Integrating Virtual Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Into Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care: Mixed Methods Feasibility Trial

Psychiatric comorbidities are common in people with IBD. A recent study reported that compared with the general population, adults with IBD have 10 times the risk of suicide, anxiety diagnoses, and depression diagnoses [7]. Further, a meta-analysis of over 30,000 patients with IBD estimated the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients with active IBD to be 57.6% and 38.9%, respectively [8].

The Effect of an Electronic Medical Record–Based Clinical Decision Support System on Adherence to Clinical Protocols in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care: Interrupted Time Series Study

The Effect of an Electronic Medical Record–Based Clinical Decision Support System on Adherence to Clinical Protocols in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care: Interrupted Time Series Study

There are several demonstrated gaps in the adoption of professional society clinical care guidelines and best practices for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). These include practices in medication management, preventative care, and bone health [10,11]. The University of Alberta IBD outpatient clinic (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) has previously developed and implemented several clinical care pathways to consolidate best practices for IBD [10,12].

Cognitive Dysfunction and Affective Mood Disorder Screening in Patients With Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Protocol for a Prospective Case-Control Study

Cognitive Dysfunction and Affective Mood Disorder Screening in Patients With Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Protocol for a Prospective Case-Control Study

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic conditions characterized by intestinal inflammation. The 2 most common types of IBD are Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) [1,2]. The exact mechanisms underlying the development of IBD are yet to be fully understood, but they are thought to be the result of a combination of genetic, environmental, and immunological factors.

Identifying Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease on Twitter and Learning From Their Personal Experience: Retrospective Cohort Study

Identifying Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease on Twitter and Learning From Their Personal Experience: Retrospective Cohort Study

Although a relatively large amount of research has been dedicated to diabetes or cancer, research on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is only just starting to consolidate. IBD is a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive system characterized by flares and remission states. The 2 primary diseases identified with IBD, Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis, are usually diagnosed in young patients (in the age range of 15-30 years).

Review and Analysis of German Mobile Apps for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Management Using the Mobile Application Rating Scale: Systematic Search in App Stores and Content Analysis

Review and Analysis of German Mobile Apps for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Management Using the Mobile Application Rating Scale: Systematic Search in App Stores and Content Analysis

As inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often affects younger people [12] who grew up interacting with mobile apps (ie, digital natives), IBD apps represent a great opportunity to improve the management of IBD patients [13]. In most cases, IBD requires life-long treatment and monitoring. One of the main goals of therapy is the prevention of disease relapses once remission has been achieved.

Perception of the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Time of Telemedicine: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study

Perception of the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Time of Telemedicine: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at a higher risk of infection than the general population. This is mainly due to the immunosuppressive therapy that patients with IBD receive, which involves steroids, thiopurines, and biologic agents [5-8]. A large study demonstrated that patients with IBD had an increased risk of influenza infection and were more likely to require hospitalization than those without IBD [5].

Mobile Phone Apps for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Self-Management: A Systematic Assessment of Content and Tools

Mobile Phone Apps for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Self-Management: A Systematic Assessment of Content and Tools

The purpose of this paper was to systematically study the content and functions of commercially available apps for IBD patients in the context of current clinical practice guidelines and discuss the results in relation to their utility in assisting patient with self-management of IBD. We conducted a search of the official app stores of Apple (i OS) and Google (Android) for IBD-related apps on March 3, 2015.
