Previous research into acculturation (ie, the impact of interacting with other cultures on an individual) has highlighted 2 key issues. First, the issue of cultural maintenance, which is the extent to which heritage cultural identity is considered important and practices are continued. Second, the issue of deciding on the extent of contact and participation (ie, interacting with the host culture or remaining within heritage cultural groups) [2].

However, early views and perspectives of acculturation can be valuable in theoretically explaining and discussing the process of acculturation. According to the first view, acculturation is seen as a term covering issues resulting from first-hand contact of individuals with people of different cultural backgrounds. This view also stresses that the consequence of acculturation is changes in the individual’s native or original cultural patterns and behaviors.

For immigrant studies, acculturation has been often operationalized as the extent to which immigrants adopt host cultures [20]; however, researchers are increasingly understanding acculturation as a blending of different cultural values into immigrants’ adaptation process rather than as a linearized process toward acceptance [21-23].
