COVID-19 Testing Equity in New York City During the First 2 Years of the Pandemic: Demographic Analysis of Free Testing Data

By providing access to no-cost COVID-19 testing, we sought to understand whether our equitably distributed testing program had a relationship with health outcomes and whether the no-cost testing option can be used to increase testing in underserved areas. Data on COVID-19 testing that was directly administered by the NYC H+H were collected from the in-house NYC H+H Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 18 Clarity database, representing 6,347,533 total tests and 449,721 positive test results.

The extreme cost values were truncated at the 1st and 99th percentiles (ie, replacing values smaller than the 1st percentile with the 1st percentile value, and values larger than the 99th percentile with the 99th percentile). We used the χ2 test to compare baseline characteristics by frailty category. The cumulative annual costs (total health care costs, inpatient costs, and outpatient costs) were compared using one-way ANOVA.

In 2022, entrepreneur Mark Cuban launched the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company (Cost Plus)—a public benefit corporation with a vertically integrated supply chain—to address rising pharmaceutical costs [2,5]. Cost Plus offers medications for a 15% markup and a US $5 pharmacy fee, allowing for significant cost savings [5]. Studies have found that pharmacy coupon websites can lead to significant savings for patients within dermatology, with Good Rx providing some of the highest rates of saving [6].

Hence, when the NSC is cost-saving, the ICER is negative.

Predictive Modeling of Hypertension-Related Postpartum Readmission: Retrospective Cohort Analysis

We used a cost-sensitive random forest method to predict which patient would experience a hypertension-related postpartum readmission [14]. Since the data set was imbalanced (only 170 readmissions out of 32,645 participants), the use of class weights that penalize false negatives significantly higher than false positives was necessary to avoid ML models that predict every sample as the negative class.
