The objective of this study is to present the results of a proof-of-principle pilot study conducted on 5 patients with stroke to examine the feasibility and benefits of a 6-week game-based exercise program using the RMD. The RMD described in this paper explains an integrated controller to generate forces that can aid voluntary movements necessary during gaming exercises, making it suitable for patients with limited movement control and those with a restricted active range of motion.

Because of the pilot design, this study had a small sample size. Future larger studies would enable the comparison of different levels of training, specialties, and sociodemographic characteristics. In addition, future qualitative research may help with gaining insight into factors motivating engagement with the app. This study also has notable strengths, including the examination of a tailored adjunct m Health app with mostly positive impacts on medical trainees.

Furthermore, following a common rule of thumb for pilot studies, which typically suggest around 30 participants, we decided on a sample size of 30 extractions, with 15 extraction sockets in each group. The number of sockets per patient varies based on individual clinical circumstances. This sample size was deemed appropriate for assessing safety, feasibility, and generating preliminary efficacy data.

There were 22,278 patient encounters in the pilot program, of which 19,595 patient VUC encounters were available for data linkage. This included 2931 (15%) VUC encounters that resulted in a referral to an in-person ED and 16,664 (85%) VUC encounters that did not result in a referral to an in-person ED.

As this is a pilot study, future research can extend the study on improving the design by integrating participants’ suggestions. The ability to personalize the program’s contents to cater to specific user needs and profiles would also be a fundamental improvement based on user feedback. For instance, users with particular diseases such as diabetes could receive more targeted information on healthy habits to manage their condition.
