Improving Outcomes and Quality of Life for Patients With Hand and Foot Eczema: Randomized Study of a Patient-Centered Monitoring App

Improving Outcomes and Quality of Life for Patients With Hand and Foot Eczema: Randomized Study of a Patient-Centered Monitoring App

The app also facilitated teledermatology appointments tailored to individual patient needs. To evaluate the effectiveness of this tool for chronic hand and foot eczema, we conducted an interventional study comparing a control group (without the app or educational program) with an intervention group over a 60-week period. Interim results from a 24-week analysis already showed an improvement in quality of life [10].

Challenges in Teledermoscopy Diagnostic Outcome Studies: Scoping Review of Heterogeneous Study Characteristics

Challenges in Teledermoscopy Diagnostic Outcome Studies: Scoping Review of Heterogeneous Study Characteristics

Moreover, a scoping review on consensus guidelines for teledermatology highlights the need for updating guidelines and thereby incorporating lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic [13]. While many guidelines emerged during the pandemic addressing specific issues, such as staff shortages and quarantine measures, there is a lack of new guidance on emerging technologies and postpandemic practices.

Participant Motivators and Expectations in the MEL-SELF Randomized Clinical Trial of Patient-Led Surveillance for Recurrent Melanoma: Content Analysis of Survey Responses

Participant Motivators and Expectations in the MEL-SELF Randomized Clinical Trial of Patient-Led Surveillance for Recurrent Melanoma: Content Analysis of Survey Responses

The MEL-SELF RCT aims to assess whether patient-led surveillance (comprising smartphone-supported skin self-examination, teledermatology, fast-tracked unscheduled clinic visits in addition to routinely scheduled clinic visits) compared with clinician-led surveillance (usual care) leads to increased diagnoses of a new primary or recurrent melanoma ahead of routinely scheduled clinic visits [9].

JMIR Dermatology’s 2023 Year in Review

JMIR Dermatology’s 2023 Year in Review

The 3 publications with the highest Altmetric scores (as of December 4, 2023) examined the strengths of teledermatology applications and areas for improving care delivery. Drabarek et al [4] provided qualitative data capturing patient impressions of a participant-led skin self-examination (SSE) model using smartphone app reminders, patient-performed dermoscopy, and teledermatology assessments. Implementation barriers revolved around participants’ perceptions of melanoma recurrence risk.

An Exploration of Dutch Dermatologists’ Experience and Satisfaction With Teledermatology: Sociotechnical and Complex Adaptive System Perspective

An Exploration of Dutch Dermatologists’ Experience and Satisfaction With Teledermatology: Sociotechnical and Complex Adaptive System Perspective

A holistic evaluation may provide valuable insight to understand how barriers interrelate which is deemed necessary for the innovation of teledermatology in practice and to inform strategies to optimize teledermatology services.

Inequities in Technology Access and Digital Health Literacy Among Patients With Dermatologic Conditions: Cross-Sectional Analysis of the National Health Interview Survey

Inequities in Technology Access and Digital Health Literacy Among Patients With Dermatologic Conditions: Cross-Sectional Analysis of the National Health Interview Survey

Studies have shown that certain populations are less likely to participate in teledermatology visits; however, TA and DHL rates have not been described [2]. Using the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), we sought to identify factors associated with low levels of TA and DHL among people with dermatologic conditions [3]. All NHIS respondents provided oral consent prior to participation, which was voluntary.

The Value of Teledermatology Advice for Skin Toxicity in Oncology: Experience From a Pilot Study

The Value of Teledermatology Advice for Skin Toxicity in Oncology: Experience From a Pilot Study

Questionnaires on expectations and satisfaction with the teledermatology platform were completed by both patients and oncologists at the start and end of the study. Ethical approval was obtained from Ghent University Hospital (EC2018/0984) and participating hospitals, and participants provided written informed consent. The study started in January 2019 and was prematurely terminated in mid-March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Attitudes Toward and Use of eHealth Technologies Among German Dermatologists: Repeated Cross-Sectional Survey in 2019 and 2021

Attitudes Toward and Use of eHealth Technologies Among German Dermatologists: Repeated Cross-Sectional Survey in 2019 and 2021

Dermatology is a visual field enabling the adoption of applications such as AI, teledermatology, or patient monitoring for chronic dermatological diseases [9,11-13]. The implications of the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly amplified the adoption and use of digital applications in dermatology worldwide, but also in Germany. For example, every third German dermatologist used some form of teledermatology in May 2020, and of those, 75% had introduced it during the pandemic [14].
